2012 CSFF Jury
This year we’re excited to bring you a diverse jury made up of local and international talent covering a variety of different perspectives. Our jury will be voting on the best film as well as contributing 50% of the vote for best short with the second half of votes coming from our audience.
Justin Huston – President, Surfing Association of Nova Scotia
For Justin, learning to surf in Maine in the late-80’s consisted of hand-me-down single fins, long flat spells and watching his copies of the Endless Summer and Wave Warriors III over and over again. After spending some time traveling and surfing the places showcased in the surf films, Justin landed in Nova Scotia in 2000 to earn a master’s degree in Marine Management, and then never left. Justin is active in the local surf scene and currently is the president of the Surfing Association of Nova Scotia. When he’s not surfing, he works for the Government of Nova Scotia.
Caralee Murphy – Consultant, Student, Co-founder of One Life Surf
Caralee loves art, fashion, ambiance and local music. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Caralee’s surfing journey began wi
th playing guitar on the beach and avoiding the sport. By the end of high school, she finally caved and so it began. Her history includes working in community engagement, the music industry, event management and technology. Between traveling adventures and working, Caralee co-founded One Life Surf School and earned a Master’s in Education. Caralee is currently consulting and running One Life Surf while pursuing a Master’s in Business. Balance is found playing instruments, sports, dancing, writing and playing chess. Caralee currently resides on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia.
Lesley Choyce – Poet, Author, Professor & Canadian Surf Legend
Lesley is a novelist and poet living at Lawrencetown Beach in Nova Scotia. He surfs in the North Atlantic year-round. He also runs a literary publishing house and teaches in the Transition Year Program for Black and Mi’kmaq students at Dalhousie University. He is the host of a regular nationally-broadcast program on BookTelevision called Off the Page with Lesley Choyce. Choyce is the author of more than seventy books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction for adults and children including various pieces on or about surfing.
Cyrus Sutton – Film Maker, Editor, Surfer
The son of professors, Cyrus skipped college to pursue an early career of professional surfing. At 20, an injury plac
ed him on the other side of the lens making his first surf film Riding Waves. Since he’s won an Emmy Award, directed commercials and traveled the world sharing laughs with people from all walks of life. The sum of these experiences have taught him that wealth is nothing more than time and health. Now 29 years old, Cyrus resides in Encinitas, California where he founded Korduroy TV three years ago. His days are filled with curating content on Korduroy, directing tv and web commercials and getting his hands dirty in his backyard with the rest of the Korduroy crew.
Andrew Murphy – Programming Manager, Atlantic Film Festival
Andrew was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He began working with the Atlantic Film Festi
val Association in 1999 and is currently the Programming Manager, helping secure Galas, Special Presentations as well as independent films for niche programs such as The Late Shift, That’s So Gay, and ViewFinders International Film Festival for Youth.
Andrew has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and a Bachelor of Journalism. When he is not researching films and developing programs, he entertains his colleagues making coffee, writing haikus, and working towards world peace.
